Summary

Seven years ago she broke his heart。。。

When Robert Kemble stumbles across Victoria Lyndon in hedgerow maze, he can't believe his eyes。 The girl who'd torn him in two, who let him plan on elopement and then left him standing by the side of the road, was suddenly within arm's reach, and even though his fury still knew no bounds, she was impossible to resist。。。

Seven years ago he left her all but ruined。。。

Victoria's father had told her an earl would never marry a vicar's daughter, and he was right。 Robert had promised her marriage, then danced off to London while she suffered the shame of a foiled elopement。 But even though Victoria doesn't particularly enjoy her new life as a governess, when Robert offers her a job of a different sort—his mistress—she refuses, unable to sacrifice her honor, even for him。

But Robert won't take no for an answer, and he vows to make her his, through any means possible。 Can these star-crossed lovers learn to trust again? And is love really sweeter the second time around?

I loved the narrative, excellent witty dialogue, great erotic scenes, and very plausible characters。 However, there was strangely poor grammar and the occasional inelegantly written passage。 As a Bryn Mawr graduate I am surprised that Radcliffe alumna would misuse the verbs lay, lie, as well as the past tense laid。 It’s always jarring。 This must’ve been an early work when access to proofreaders may have been difficult。

Not sure why I keep going back for the heartbreak, but this was so well told。 All the what-ifs of Robert Kemble and Victoria Lyndon's histories were hard on me。 I had to pause at various points in the story, just to give my heart a rest。 Yet the resolutions were quite worth the trouble。 Even if I actually contemplated not getting past the first quarter of the story。 [Would their lives have worked had everything gone as they wanted it to, the first time around? I normally adore Julia Quinn books, but this one was disappointing。 The main characters were both annoyingly stubborn and the plot contained too much drama and too many misunderstandings。 However, one mediocre story out of her many other great ones isn’t bad。

The whole plot is unbearable, and the hero is the most toxic, controling and dominating of all。 Very slow reading while they are fighting and misbehaving for nothing。 Such a waste of time 😓

2。5 stars I don’t know how to rate this book because it made me laugh out loud in parts but then it made me roll my eyes soooo much。 So much! Like I could see my brain I was rolling so hard!So I guess I’ll say 2。5 coz half good/half bad。It’s obvious that is one of Julia Quinn’s earlier books, before she polished her style。 It doesn’t read at all like the Bridgerton series。I don’t even mind the insta-love storyline that much。 What I very much mind is the ‘misunderstanding’ storyline – it is proba 2。5 stars I don’t know how to rate this book because it made me laugh out loud in parts but then it made me roll my eyes soooo much。 So much! You’ve snuck into her room before, maybe knock on the window and say ‘What’s going on?’ Just an idea。 The whole thing was so forced and could have been solved so easily with, you know, a conversation。So that was strike one。From that point on there were a lot of scenes where I just thought ‘That would never happen。’ Or ‘That person would not have said that。’ For example would Robert’s aunt, a lady, really be thrilled that her nephew was in love with a shop worker? Would she really have camped out in a modist’s for a whole day to protect a shop girl from him? No, THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN! Also Victoria’s reluctance to marry Robert once she knew that he hadn’t abandoned her all those years ago didn’t ring entirely true。 Fair play that she was supporting herself and enjoying her independence, if she truly felt that way then he should have backed off。 But I’m not sure she really did feel that way – the truth was she didn’t trust him and she was scared to get hurt again and I don’t blame her for not trusting him after it took 2。5 seconds for his trust in her to break。 They should have just enjoyed a slow courtship and learned to trust each other again。I don’t think kidnapping was the answer really but apparently that’s what works!I’ll end with the two parts of this book that really made me laugh out loud There was nothing for it。 She would have to come clean。 Wincing at the mental pun, Victoria fairly screamed, ‘Don’t come in here!’The footsteps halted。 ‘Victoria is everything alright?’‘Yes, i’m…I’m just…’After a long beat, Robert said from just behind the door, ‘Do you have any plans to complete that sentence?’‘I’m taking a bath。’More silence, then, ‘I see。’Victoria gulped。 ‘I would rather you didn’t,’‘Didn’t what?’‘See。 Me, that is。’He let out a loud groan that Victoria heard right through the door and clear across the room。 It was impossible not to think about him thinking about ger in the tub, and -‘Do you need a towel?’Victoria exhaled, more than thrilled that he’d interrupted her thoughts, which were taking her in a most dangerous direction。 ‘No,’ she replied, ‘I have one here。’‘How unfortunate,’ he muttered。 ‘I found it with the bed linens,’ she said, mostly because she felt as if she had to say something。‘Do you need soap。’‘It was stuck to the tub。’‘Do you need food? I brought back a half dozen pasties。’Victoria stomach rumbled, but she said, ‘I’ll have one later, if you don’t mind。’‘Do you need anything?’ He sounded almost desperate。‘No, not really, although -‘‘Although what?’ He said, very quickly。 ‘What do you need? I’d be happy to bring it to you。 Ecstatic。 Anything to make you more comfortable。’…。。‘Oh Robert。’ She leaned toward him, eager for the warmth of his arms。 But before she reached him, the carriage hit a deep rut in the road, and she slipped。 ‘Oh!’ she called out - in surprise。‘Aargh!’ Robert grunted - in pain。‘Oh dear, oh dear。’ Victoria said, her words rushed。 ‘What is wrong?’‘Your elbow,’ he gasped。 ‘What? Oh, I’m sorry -。’ The carriage jolted again, and her elbow slid deeper into his mid-section。 Or at least she thought it was his mis-section。‘Please…move…it…NOW!’Victoria scrambled and managed to disentangle her limbs from his。 ‘I’m so sorry,’ she repeated。 Then she looked at him more closely。 He was doubled over, and even in the sim light she could tell that his skin looked quite green。 ‘Robert?’ She asked in a hesitant voice, ‘are you going to be all right?’‘Not for several minutes。’ 。。。more

。。。more

Usually like her books, but could not finish this。 Tried hard for 112 pages! Premise was weak。 He called through her window before to wake her but somehow he did not on the important night! She was weak and immature and remained weak through the 112 pages I read。 Not worth the effort

That is the lowest score I ever gave a book (that I read to the end) on here and there is a good reason for it。 I read almost all of Julia Quinns stories and usually gave 4 Stars, but this one is just horrible。 He falls in love on first sight and then because of a small misunderstanding just runs away because of his hurt male ego。 The whole book he treats her like a child and endangers her through his actions, but blames her for everything or makes it sound like she can't take care of herself。 I That is the lowest score I ever gave a book (that I read to the end) on here and there is a good reason for it。 I read almost all of Julia Quinns stories and usually gave 4 Stars, but this one is just horrible。 He falls in love on first sight and then because of a small misunderstanding just runs away because of his hurt male ego。 The whole book he treats her like a child and endangers her through his actions, but blames her for everything or makes it sound like she can't take care of herself。 I mean it is probably more realistic view on marriages at the time compared to other 18。/19。 century books I read so far, so if that is what the author wanted to achive then: 5 Stars。 。。。more

Love at first sight or abuse?I usually love Julia Quinn novels but this one was too much。 The beginning was mostly sweet。 But after they have their falling out the main man’s behavior becomes atrocious。 He acts as though he owns her。 He does whatever he wants and justifies it by saying it is out of love。 He stalks her, kisses her when she asks him not to and then kidnaps her! Just because she once loved him did not give him permission to continuously go against her wishes and pursue her。 She exp Love at first sight or abuse?I usually love Julia Quinn novels but this one was too much。 The beginning was mostly sweet。 But after they have their falling out the main man’s behavior becomes atrocious。 He acts as though he owns her。 He does whatever he wants and justifies it by saying it is out of love。 He stalks her, kisses her when she asks him not to and then kidnaps her! Did not like this one by Julia Quinn。 I usually love pained-angsty longing tropes however I feel like the characters here were not likable at all。 Especially Victoria。 Everyone's comments about Victoria being a wishy-washy asshole is right。 She says she loves the hero and then she doesn't proceeding to keep him on a bloody leash。 She's saying hmmm maybe I want independence after all, but then keeps on leading him on。 I mean the Earl was also an ass-y idiot but Victoria to me was worse by a mile。 Did not like this one by Julia Quinn。 I usually love pained-angsty longing tropes however I feel like the characters here were not likable at all。 Especially Victoria。 Everyone's comments about Victoria being a wishy-washy asshole is right。 She says she loves the hero and then she doesn't proceeding to keep him on a bloody leash。 She's saying hmmm maybe I want independence after all, but then keeps on leading him on。 I mean the Earl was also an ass-y idiot but Victoria to me was worse by a mile。 Ultimately, this book was not worth the read, did not give me butterflies, or longing or anything except irritation。 Compared to this mess, you'd be better off reading Victoria's sister's story "Brighter than the Sun"。 I liked both her (Ellie) and her leading man (Charles)。 。。。more
